Following local custom after a wedding, bride Maja is "abducted" by a team of friends and placed blindfolded in a small boat. Her groom is then dispatched to find her in a rowboat, but he discovers her murdered and propped against a tree. Her veil and ring are missing. Various suspects seem possible, including a young couple who form a society to prevent the killing of a flock of cormorants that next next to the lake, and a fisherman whom the couple suspects of being the bird's killer. The fisherman, Meinert, dies when Oberlander visits his house. He fires his shotgun at the wall, and the recoil apparently causes him to tumble backwards down a flight of stairs and a broken neck. Items found in his house eventually point towards the reason for Maja's murder and the actual killer. Oberlander reconciles with Kim .
