In the wake of the shameful evacuation of Danevirke, the retreating Danish troops are harried by the ruthless Prussian Hussars. Laust's division is caught in a snowstorm, and the young soldier faces further danger when he is ordered to retrieve an artillery piece from a frozen lake.
