La prima Olimpiade invernale di Chamonix è datata 1924, esattamente 28 anni dopo la prima Olimpiade moderna svoltasi ad Atene nel 1896. Un ritardo dovuto al fatto che gli sport invernali erano appannaggio dei soli paesi nordici che avevano gran dimestichezza con la neve e il ghiaccio.
