To watch Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster use their combined star power to rescue this comedy from its ropey script is to witness celebrity at its most intense and endearing. As the perpetrators of America's last train robbery, they are released from prison, elderly and bewildered, into an ageist world, so they mount their own grey offensive. Douglas's athletic and sexual prowess is a show-off embarrassment, but Lancaster retains a dignity and poise that confronts the dilemma of age with enormous poignancy.
