Her brother Ben, an alcoholic running the boat badly, died braving a dare in a predicted storm, leaving his schoolboy son Johnny a wreck, assuming himself guilty due to a fisherman superstition, rendering him an even more troublesome pupil. Meeting Ray again, who helps Liz with the family drama, makes her question if career should prime over private life, while his father, local legendary lawyer Peter Kincaide, ruthlessly plays on that emotional weakness to wriggle into the lucrative quota case when Harper doubts if Liz can swing it.
