U Lilleu tri spomenika govore o povijesti grada i sposobnosti ljudi da pomaknu granice gradnje. Citadela Vauban, remek-djelo vojničkoga umijeća, zaštićena je golemim vodenim obrambenim sustavima. Savršene i tajanstvene proporcije Stare burze, inovativni arhitektonski izbori i raskošni ukrasi obilježili su duboko i trajno arhitekturu grada. A tu je i gradska vijećnica i njezina kula čije su impresivne dimenzije i masovno korištenje armiranog betona nužno zahtijevali nevjerojatne tehničke podvige.
