"U roku od nekoliko mjeseci došao sam takoreći do kraja, to jest do crno-bijele slike, do meandra od kojeg se dalje jednostavnije ne može", zapisao je Julije Knifer. To se dogodilo 1960. upravo na slici koju je uz naslov Meandar obilježio brojem 1. Ova je slika prekretnica, ali i svojevrsni putokaz svim budućim meandrima. Od tada Knifer ustrajno ponavlja isto: crno-bijele vertikalno-horizontalne plohe koje teku u kontinuitetu ili se prekidaju pa opet nastavljaju na istoj ili idućoj slici.
