One of the great Cork hurlers, Gerald McCarthy won five All Ireland medals between 1966 and 1978. He then made his mark as a manager with Waterford in the late 1990s but when he took over his native county in 2007, players strikes and a bitter fallout bought his time in the Cork GAA to a disappointing end.
