April 20, 1945. In his Berlin bunker, Adolf Hitler is celebrating his fifty-sixth birthday. With him are those of his entourage who have chosen or are obliged to stay with him to the end. Though the Russians have encircled Berlin, Hitler still cherishes the illusion that the remnants of the German army can defeat them.
