SYNOPSIS

Usred južnog Pacifika, samo četiri sata leta od Tahitija, smješteno je Markižansko otočje. 14 otoka koji pripadaju Francuskoj Polineziji naseljava otprilike 9000 stanovnika, a uopće se ne poklapaju s tipičnim izgledom otoka Južnoga mora. Umjesto plavih laguna i bijelih, palmama obrubljenih plaža, ovdje vidimo nemirno more, stjenovite obale i surove planine. Ovo nije turistička regija, internet je postao dostupan tek prije nekoliko godina. Moderne potrepštine kao što su automobili, hladnjaci i sredstvo za pranje rublja svaka tri tjedna teretni brod dostavlja s Tahitija.
Kad je Herman Melville, autor "Mobyja Dicka", 1842. stigao na otok Nuku Hiva, njegovi stanovnici bili su kanibali. No misionari su promijenili svjetonazor domorodaca i preobratili ih na kršćanstvo. Na otočiću Hiva Oa na istom su groblju pokopani Jacques Brel i Paul Gauguin, daleko od domovine.
