SEASON: 37

EPISODE: 8 - World War One Special

SYNOPSIS

Fiona Bruce presents a second programme from the Somme battlefields, in which she and a small group of experts meet families with stories of courage and humanity in wartime, with various items helping to bring their tales to life. They include the story of a footballer who is said to have kicked a ball to lead an advance into enemy lines, and the account of one of the first nurses to have gone to war - and ended up serving alongside Edith Cavell. A German soldier's grandson reveals all the objects his relative took to the trenches where he lost his life - including a letter to be read in the event of his death - and Fiona tells the story of her great-grandfather, who fought at the Somme.
