SYNOPSIS

1386. In an alpine city in Schwaben (southern Wurtemberg), council member and leading merchant Eckhardt Willinger fears a illness may be fatal and asks his son Otfried to save his soul by posthumously bringing his heart in pilgrimage to Copostella to atone for a lowlife's death by greedy neglect. Appalled that not he but his future brother in law is to inherit father's position, Otfried asphyxiates Eckhart and agrees a double marriage for him and his sister with another council member and his daughter, including a secret, illegal league with mighty neighbor Bavaria.
