SYNOPSIS

This is the definitive movie version (it had been filmed before in 1919) of LM Montgomery's popular tale about the teenage orphan. Child actress Dawn O'Day changed her professional name to that of the film's character, and as Anne Shirley delivered an exquisite, utterly charming performance. This is a real one-off: the 1940 sequel Anne of Windy Poplars is feeble by comparison, and Shirley was not nearly as beguiling as a grown-up, though she did continue a useful, if not striking, screen career.
