The police investigate Emily's death, while flashbacks show how her behaviour grew ever more erratic in the time leading up to her murder. A series of revelations about the eight-year-old girl reveal how she drove her family to despair by abducting her baby sister and making thinly veiled accusations of abuse against stepbrother Jack.
