The main character is Adem Cabric, disbanded soldier who gets a job in Stavnik as a worker in the tanner store of old master Arif Zejnilovic. Adem has proven himself a skillful trader, eventually getting married master Zejnilovic's deaf-mute heiress daughter Safija.
