SYNOPSIS

Sam Willis concludes his exploration of the criminal underworld of the 17th and 18th centuries by looking at urban crime, fraud and corruption, uncovering a fascinating rogues' gallery of villains. He examines the case of thief and serial escaper Jack Sheppard, who was so notorious that almost a quarter of a million people turned up to witness his hanging, while fraudster Mary Toft managed to convince George I's surgeon that she had given birth to rabbits. Last in the series.
