SYNOPSIS

Michael Portillo embarks on the first leg of a series of journeys through London and its environs, beginning in the Buckinghamshire market town of Amersham, where he discovers the foundations of modern-day suburbia. In Pinner, he finds out about a Victorian domestic goddess, investigates the terraced catacombs of Highgate cemetery and ends with a trip to London Zoo in Regent's Park.
