SEASON: 36

EPISODE: 16 - World War One Special

SYNOPSIS

Fiona Bruce presents the first of two special editions marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. She and a small group of experts travel to the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme in France, where visitors tell their family stories of the conflict, with various items helping to bring their tales to life. Objects include pictures of horses sent to war painted by a doctor serving on the frontline, bronze sculptures of troops modelled from trench clay and the belongings of a woman who treated wounded soldiers. Fiona also meets a 101-year-old woman who still remembers one of the first bombing raids on Britain, when she and her classmates hid under their school desks.
