Years after John Winterbottom's death, his sole heir Greta tries to hire, on her deathbed, journalist school acquaintance Iris Harding, to fulfill his last wish: track down his unidentified first love. Maura, John's widow, her parasitical lover and her son Patrick Yale ignored the request and tell her to return to her London fiance Marc, canceling the job, but she remains for now. Patrick is, to Maura's dismay, socially engaged as investigative reporter of the local radio station, founded by John, defending the Cornish environment against the oil business, which hired a lawyer to stop his opposition to their offshore drilling plans whatever it takes, and Timothy offers him a discrete deal.
