OPIS
First of two documentaries asking why Afghanistan has become an unlikely target for the world's superpowers to invade. MP Rory Stewart - deputy governor during the coalition's occupation of Iraq - uncovers the fears, paranoia and perceived threats that have led Britain, Russia and the US into the country from the 19th century to the present day. He begins with the first British invasion of Afghanistan in 1838, and the three Anglo-Afghan wars that followed. Concludes on Wednesday.
