Julius von Tallien invites Barbara to spend the summer and attend his daughter Marianne's grand wedding at the family castle. She's the orphaned daughter of his sister Barja, who was discredited on account of an 'undesirable affair. The girl's lack of finesse disturbs the women, especially Julius's wife.
