A desperately poor Fantine is forced to flee Paris in search of work, and is left contemplating a terrible decision that could ensure her daughter enjoys a brighter future. Her fate takes an even darker turn as she struggles to meet the increasingly outrageous demands of the Thenardiers. Valjean settles into his new life as a prosperous factory owner, but his newfound happiness is threatened when Javert is appointed as the town's new police inspector, and remains as determined as ever to expose him.
