In this western, Glenn Ford plays an embittered bounty hunter, still haunted by the memory of his son who was gunned down by a gang he continues to hunt. In a twist of fate he becomes the surrogate father to another boy - whose father he has killed - and still the ironies pile upon Ford, turning him into a figure from Greek tragedy. While the style of this effort does not even approach that of the westerns Anthony Mann made with James Stewart, its similar classical allegiances and convincingly tormented hero make for an immensely satisfying drama. It is certainly the best performance the usually bland Ford has given since The Big Heat and Human Desire in the early 1950s.
