1914. A weakened Ottoman Empire joined the war alongside the Germans and Austro-Hungarians. A context of national decline provided the backdrop for the Armenian massacre, the 20th century's first genocide. Arab nationalism was increasing, with the British and French exploiting this to establish their hold on the Middle East.
