This low-budget - yes - urban ghost story comes from the young authors of the Guerrilla Film-Makers Handbook (Genevieve Jolliffe directs, Chris Jones produces, both wrote the script), whose philosophy is "Get a camera, get some stock, go shoot a movie". This is the third time they have followed their own advice, though their first two efforts were scarcely seen. Urban Ghost Story deserves a wider audience. It's Poltergeist-meets-Ratcatcher as a 12-year-old girl (newcomer Heather Ann Foster) in a Glasgow tenement starts to detect supernatural rumblings while recovering from an ecstasy-linked near-death experience. Jason Connery plays against type as a tabloid reporter seeking to exploit the story, as ghostbusters and spiritualists descend on the council flat. Original and naturalistic film-makers, Jolliffe and Jones certainly have the promise to back up their vision and ultimately the constraints of a {pound}220,000 budget prove the mother of invention. Perhaps millions would ruin them. Still, it's worth seeking out, but don't expect high-octane pyrotechnics.
