SYNOPSIS

Marie's base work will soon be more than just a job. Amy McCoy, the Colonel's wife, who initially appeared rather negative, recognizes the potential of the farmer's daughter and introduces Marie to the world of art and literature. Meanwhile, George makes further attempts to get closer to Marie, brings the Kastners presents and rents a room from them - against Marie's will, but on the initiative of her little brother Vincent. He smells good business, also with the cigarettes that George brings him. Meanwhile, to the displeasure of her family, Erika is absorbed in American dance culture. She persuades Marie to accompany her to the grand opening ceremony of the Hawaii bar, which is to replace the old post office. The long-established regulars are indignant - especially the pastor. He railed against the American way of life, which he sees as a threat to morality in Kaltenstein, which he can use to influence Erika's mother, the mayor's wife Anneliese Strumm, in particular. At the time, nobody knew that the new bar owner with the nickname Schwiete was a descendant of a Jew who had been expelled from the city. Not even Marie and Erika, who enjoy their newfound freedom: Marie, when she lets George ask her to dance, teach him some German and cycling and finally let her feelings run free while kissing at the lake. And Erika, by having Schwiete engage her for a revealing dance performance in the Hawaii bar. The "American Boys" carry them on their hands. But both women face immediate consequences: Marie is intimidated by the military police not to get involved with a black man.
