SYNOPSIS
En 1561, Mary Stuart revient sur ses terres écossaises après la mort de son mari, François II de France. Veuve et sans prétendant, elle tente de reprendre le trône d’Ecosse. Catholique fervente, Mary est prise sous la menace protestante, influencée par son demi-frère James Stuart et le courtisan John Knox. En Angleterre, sa cousine la reine Elizabeth 1ère, protestante, voit le retour de Mary Stuart comme un danger et craint pour son règne. Entre querelles religieuses, conspirations et jalousie, les deux femmes resteront deux grandes ennemies jusqu’à leur mort.
