SYNOPSIS

Despite Joshua Logan's stodgy staging, this sumptuous screen version of the Arthurian musical by Lerner and Loewe still pierces the heart in Excalibur fashion. Vanessa Redgrave as Guenevere convincingly enthrals both King Arthur (Richard Harris) and Lancelot (Franco Nero), and us. The stars may not be particularly tuneful, but they compensate for that with their dramatic and moving interpretation of the glorious songs. This ideal world corrupted by passion makes the Sean Connery/Richard Gere rendition First Knight look like little more than a charade.
