Miranda comes urge him to abandon the assault to save Vane's prisoner, the Carolina governor Peter Ashe's daughter Abigail, but Flint doubts if even her rescue can restore Peter's benevolent attitude, given his recent cruelty towards piracy. They recall how Lord Alfred Hamilton has his son Thomas committed to a lunatic asylum and and disowned Anne as adulteress to cover up Thomas's gay affair with the future Flint.
