Taking an instant dislike to rookie Pete, he shows similar unease around Chief Boden, and it soon becomes clear that the former fireman once worked alongside Pete's dad, who died in the line of duty. Meanwhile, Shay decides to become a mother through artificial insemination in the aftermath of her split from Clarisse, and Casey makes an ill-advised choice in his date for the Fire Academy's banquet.
