ÖZET

As more girls and staff leave the school Dianne discovers that Sara has disappeared and disbelieves Hester's account that her guardian collected her, informing Sergeant Bumpher and her watch-maker lover Louis Montpelier. Hester responds by sacking her and a reluctant Dora Lumly. Hester is ambivalent when Dr Mackenzie proposes marriage whilst, in Melbourne, Irma tells Bumpher, investigating Sara's disappearance, that Hester is " a fraud".
