Archaeologists like Timo Ibsen (Zentrum für Baltische und Skandinavische Archäologie) seek out traces all over and around Germany of paganism, before and even during Christianity (which in a sense adopted various features), which reveal more thanks to modern techniques. Primitive and higher civilizations (Stone Age, Celtic, Roman, Germanic, Slavic and other) left notably sacrificial and/or cannibalistic or other cultic sites including natural features like rocks, springs, caves and wood spots as well as artificial temples and tombs. They are highly diverse, some famous, other recently (re-discovered, often subject of speculation for lack of ample literature concerning purposes (supplication, gratification, magical, healing, cursing, consultation of ancestors, oracle ...) *. Some also served as refuge or monument, many contain precious objects, (human) sacrifices.
