Albert Speer was one of Adolf Hitler's closest confidants. The armaments minister and chief architect of the Third Reich led millions of forced laborers to their deaths. It was he who shaped the formal vocabulary and symbolism of the regime that put the population under its terrible spell. The architect, who came from an upper-class family, pursued a career different from that of his family fathers. Speer allowed people to starve and die in his labor camps. He gave evil a face.
