SYNOPSIS

Victoria struggled to perform her responsibilities as a monarch throughout the 1860s. She hid herself away at Osborne House, Windsor Castle, and Balmoral. She complained about how unsuitable her eldest son was to be King, with his frivolous, showy lifestyle, but didn’t realise that his glamorous public appearances were distracting the British public from her own disappearance into mourning. Although she stayed in mourning clothes, Victoria found a new influence in her life that relieved her depression. His name was John Brown, a Highland servant who started out caring for her pony at Balmoral, but gradually got promoted to be her private secretary.
