SYNOPSIS

Da bi se zaustavio prodor Turaka na zapad, mala srednjovjekovna tvrđava preuređuje se tijekom 16. i 17. stoljeća u jedan od najsuvremenijih obrambenih graničnih sustava između Drave i Save, u renesansnu fortifikaciju s bedemima i bastionima na uglovima, okruženu jarcima i vodom.
Bedemi su u 19. stoljeću postali zapreka prostornom širenju grada koji je počeo izlaziti iz povijesne jezgre, pa ih 1840-ih počinju rušiti, a jarke s vodom zatrpavati. Središnji je dio utvrde u 19. stoljeću zamijenio prostrani park s paviljonom u sredini.
