SYNOPSIS

Simon Sebag Montefiore explores how Jerusalem became a sacred place in Islam, charting Muhammad's relationship with the city, the Crusaders' attempts to reclaim it for Christianity and the construction of holy shrine the Dome of the Rock. He also profiles lesser-known characters in the religion's history, including Al Hakim and Queen Melisende, and discovers parallels between 13th-century peace talks and the current tensions in the Middle East.
