SYNOPSIS

The introduction of conscription sees call-up papers delivered throughout the village, while opinion is divided when it becomes public knowledge that schoolteacher Eyre is a conscientious objector. Bert tries to help his mentor at the tribunal but his intervention only makes matters worse. Grace worries when there is no news of Joe from the front line, the Allinghams discover Caro is pregnant and Hankin opens his boot factory using the local women as cheap labour. Maxine Peake, Bill Jones and Matt Stokoe star in the period drama.
