SYNOPSIS

Jedan od najvećih francuskih slikara 19. stoljeća, Edouard Manet se smatra začetnikom modernog slikarstva koje je oslobodio akademizma. Manet isprva skandalizira svojim žanrovskim prizorima. Budući da ga ne prihvaćaju na službenim izložbama, jedna je od najistaknutijih figura elegantnih boemskih krugova. Druži se s umjetnicima koji ga cijene kao što su Edgard Degas i književnici poput pjesnika Charlesa Baudelairea ili romanopisca Émila Zole čiji je portret i danas slavan.
Slikao je i portrete svojih drugih prijatelja poput Stéphanea Mallarméa i Gergesa Clemenceaua. Postaje sve priznatiji te 1. siječnja 1882. prima odlikovanje Legije časti. Umire 1883. u 51. godini života, a za sobom ostavlja više od četiristo platna.
