SYNOPSIS

BERTIE & ELIZABETH provides an intimate and affectionate portrait of the endearing love affair between the young Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and the younger son of George V and Queen Mary, the future George VI, affectionately known as Bertie. The couples love blossomed from their courtship through to their wedding in 1923, as the future Queen supported her husband not only as he laboured with affairs of state but also as he tried to conquer his stammering and crippling shyness.

From their first meeting in 1920 to Berties death in 1952, their romance and subsequent married life together is set against the backdrop of landmark events of the twentieth century, such as the Abdication of Edward VIII (Berties brother), Berties coronation as the British King known as George VI, his and Churchills relationship during the War and his early death. The production features dramatic reconstructions of well-known episodes from George VIs reign; Elizabeths inspiring visit with the King to the East End of London after German bombs fell on Buckingham Palace, and the Kings broadcast to his people on Victory Day in Europe.
