Legendarni John Wayne (Rio Bravo, Tragači, Poštanska kočija) trebao je biti samo producent ovog filma, no nakon što se glavni glumac Robert Mitchum posvađao s redateljem, Gregory Peck odbio ulogu, a Humphrey Bogart bio preskup, Wayne je sam odglumio američkog macho mornara, koji kineske seljake pokušava izbaviti iz ralja komunističkog režima, ulogu koja je izvrsno korespondirala s njegovim antikomunističkim stavovima.
