SYNOPSIS
Similar to A Walk in the Sun, this salute to the ordinary, anonymous foot soldier is based on the memoirs of war correspondent, Ernie Pyle, who is played by Burgess Meredith. Dealing with the guys who yomped it all the way from North Africa to Rome via Sicily, it was hailed at the time as one of the most authentic war movies ever made. Like Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan - which owes a lot to this movie - it's crudely manipulative yet often very moving, mainly due to Robert Mitchum's star-building, Oscar-nominated performance as the GI who rises to become the platoon's commander.
