Tell No One

SYNOPSIS

An air of calculation pervades actor/director Guillaume Canet's adaptation of American thriller writer Harlan Coben's bestselling novel. Set in Paris, it's a well-told tale of sinister connivance that stars an impressive François Cluzet as the Hitchcockian everyman whose life is shattered by the murder of his wife (Marie-Josée Croze). Eight years later he becomes the chief suspect when fresh clues relating to her death emerge - just as he receives an email suggesting that she's actually alive and in trouble. Adroitly alternating between mysterious revelation and moments of abrasive action, Canet (who also appears in the film) is assisted by committed performances from an excellent cast that includes Kristin Scott Thomas, Nathalie Baye, Jean Rochefort, Francois Berléand and André Dussollier. But he fails to paper over all the cracks in the narrative logic, as he draws us into a sordid conspiracy that's saddled with the nastiest of MacGuffins.
