As Ivan goes through with the brain surgery to remove the tumor, which could take his life earlier than he hoped, Carolyn, having a greater connection to the work and the possibility of seeing Will again, decides to take Ivan's place on the flatline table, with only Zed in the know and by her side. What happens to Ivan and Carolyn have profound effects on everyone around them, with Carolyn coming to some conclusions on the life after death work, but perhaps not the ones she was anticipating.
