The young cellist Stefano from the province seeks success in Rome, trying to be recommended by the impresario Melchiorri for a place at the Opera House. The failures multiply, until Stefano, increasingly disillusioned by a narrow and ignorant society, by the same idle Melchiorri, and by his girlfriend Giorgia who betrays him, decides to return home.
