Teacher Helen Ryland (Juliet Stevenson) is distraught to discover her only son has been killed during his first day of work at a local factory. While her husband Frank (Peter Capaldi) is consumed by grief, she sets out to discover how the accident happened. However, when questioning of a witness and the facility's owner proves fruitless, and the process of getting someone to accept responsibility drags on, she resorts to desperate measures.
