This rather humdrum look at young love turning into disgruntled parenthood stars a highly believable Kevin Bacon and a less rooted-in-reality Elizabeth McGovern. There are some neat jokes about bulges, nappies and loss of freedom, and Bacon's terror at the impending event is almost palpable. But the movie fails to break any new ground, and, after a while, there is a familiar jaded ring to every hackneyed scenario. This is a shame, as director John Hughes tries his best to give everything a sparky, pacey feel, but the end result is simply just not funny enough.
