UPDATE: The Handmaid’s Tale Coming Into Focus With New Details

utorak, 10. siječnja 2017. 16:30

The Handmaid’s Tale TV Series Arrives on Hulu April 26, 2017.
This past Saturday, Hulu shared their first teaser trailer for The Handmaid’s Tale TV series, which we’ll get to in a moment, while also sharing a number of details regarding the upcoming Margaret Atwood adaptation as part of the ongoing TCA event.
First, according to THR, series creator Bruce Miller revealed that they’re attempting to be very loyal to the source material, saying that “We think the book is excellent. With any changes we make, we are mindful that we’re connected to the original material.” However, he also teased the possibility of more Tale after the initial 10 episode run debuts.
“When you have a novel, and you have a TV show, the dynamics of the relationships have to be a little different to play over time. There’s an incredible amount of story in the book. The more we look into it, the further the horizon of stories we can tell.” Whatever addition material (if any) that further horizon may hold, however, it’s apparently going to end in a similar vein to the original novel, with Miller adding that “I liked Sense and Sensibility when I saw it, and I knew what was going to happen there too.”

Miller, and the cast, also drew many parallels to the current political and world climate, with Joseph Fiennes calling the series “Prescient, for sure,” and Samira Wiley saying that it’s quite relevant to “the social climate now.” In addition, here are some other choice quotes from various sources taking part in the TCA event, as well a new poster for the series:

OK, and now, let’s take a look at that trailer.
The First Teaser/Trailer For The Handmaid’s Tale TV Series From Hulu
Well, with all the recent shots Hulu has provided from the series, the advance info and mini-reviews from the press lucky enough to be part of the TCA event, and the teaser trailer, I’m now very excited to take this series in come late April.
Update 01-5-17: Actress Alexis Bledel Has Signed On For Key Role in The Handmaid’s Tale
Hulu has revealed that Gilmore Girls star Alexis Bledel has joined the cast of The Handmaid’s Tale TV series, via their official Twitter account for the series.
NEWS: @alexisbledel joins the cast of The #HandmaidsTale as Ofglen. Premieres April 26, only on @Hulu pic.twitter.com/QHFazTAXnV
— The Handmaid’s Tale (@HandmaidsOnHulu) January 5, 2017
As mentioned in the tweet, she’ll be playing the role of Ofglen, who apparently is a companion assigned to Offred and she goes about various chores. From what I understand, she seems pretty much a part of the system currently in place, but eventually becomes an important character in the resistance and somewhat of a ‘confidant’ for Offred.
Update 12-28-16: Hulu Offers Additional Photos From The Handmaid’s Tale TV Series
Perhaps as a slightly belated Christmas gift to us all, Hulu has revealed another group of photos from their adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale.

In addition to another shot of Fiennes, we also get to see actresses Strahovski and Wiley in character for the first time. Very, very cool.
Update 12-21-16: Hulu Shares a Number of Photos From Their Upcoming The Handmaid’s Tale, Sets Release Date
Over the past week or so, Hulu has shared a number of very atmospheric images from their upcoming adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. And, more importantly, we now know to mark the date April 26th, 2017 on our calendars as the release date for the series.

Though all of the images are fairly striking, offering our first glimpses of Moss and Fiennes in character, the last image is particularly impressive. With each new bit Hulu offers, it really seems like they are being successful in creating a very specific feel for the show. Also, it’s got to feel good when the creator of the source material for an adaptation is impressed with what you’re doing.
From what I have sneak-peeked, it’s amazing! #HandmaidsOnHulu @hulu @MGM_Studios https://t.co/8RJjhtmk6J

Update 12-12-16: Actress Madeline Brewer Joins The Handmaid’s Tale
Another Orange Is the New Black alum, Madeline Brewer, has joined the cast of The Handmaid’s Tale, according to an interview in Parade. She doesn’t reveal the character she’s playing, though she had a good reason not to. Apparently, she can’t talk about her role because her character is “a walking spoiler.”
Update 10-27-16: The Handmaid’s Tale Cast Grows Larger
Deadline is reporting that actress Ever Carradine has booked a spot on Hulu’s upcoming TV series adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale. She’ll be playing the role of Naomi Putnam, who is being described as “a proud, imperious woman whose handmaid has just had her baby.”  Apparently, she also claims the baby as her own, as part of a ceremony that exists in Atwood’s world.
Update 10-7-16 Hulu Has Dropped the First Teaser for the Handmaid’s Tale TV Series
Roughly half a year after the announcement they were adapting The Handmaid’s Tale into a TV series, Hulu has now shared the first teaser, via the show’s official Twitter account.
Blessed be the fruit. #HandmaidsOnHulu @Hulu @MargaretAtwood pic.twitter.com/lzxbX526yY
— The Handmaid’s Tale (@HandmaidsOnHulu) October 7, 2016
And while it may not be a particularly expansive teaser, it does hint at the fact that Hulu is creating a very interesting atmosphere for the show.
Update 08-29-16: The Handmaid’s Tale TV Series Scores a Pair of New Cast Members
A few days back, Variety reported that actor Joseph Fiennes had signed onto Hulu’s adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale as ‘The Commander.’ And now, it’s being reported that Yvonne Strahovski has joined the cast as well, in the role of ‘Serena Joy,’ the wife of Fiennes’ commander.
They will be joining an already interesting cast, including Elisabeth Moss, Samira Wiley (who will play ‘Moira’), Ann Dowd, Max Minghella and Madeline Brewer.
Update 7-25-16: New Cast Member Revealed for Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale
According to Variety, actress Samira Wiley (best know for her work on the Netflix original series Orange is the New Black) has signed on to star alongside Elisabeth Moss in Hulu’s upcoming The Handmaid’s Tale TV series. As of yet, her role has not been revealed.
Original Post 04-30-16: Hulu Producing The Handmaid’s Tale TV Series, Based on Margaret Atwood’s Novel
Deadline is reporting that The Handmaid’s Tale, one of author Margaret Atwood’s most celebrated novels, is being adapted by Hulu into a TV series. Categorized as many things (depending on who you ask), from science fiction to speculative dystopic fiction, near future fiction, and feminist science fiction, The Handmaid’s Tale TV series from for Hulu will star Elisabeth Moss (best known as Peggy from Mad Men) in the primary role of Offred, the heroine.
“Nolite te bastardes carborundorum.”
So, for those of us who haven’t read the novel, what is The Handmaid’s Tale, about? Well, the story takes place after an Old Testament-style revolution overthrows the United States and transforms it into a militarized, hierarchical, ultra-religious theocracy where a Children of Men style sterility is on the rise. Offred is one of many Handmaids, fertile young women kept as servants for reproductive purposes only. Most women are devoid of any rights and even forbidden to read.

Offred remembers life before the Sons of Jacob destroyed the United States as we know it, and uses that knowledge to fight against the oppression in small, quiet ways. Her life and the lives of all Handmaids are in terrible danger, and one small slip up could bring about the end of her secret revolution.
Any Other News About The Handmaid’s Tale TV Series?
In addition to Moss, writer/director Bruce Miller (with plenty of sci-fi related credits to his name, including work on The 100, The 4400, Eureka) is being listed as the series creator/writer and executive producer. Finally, Atwood herself will serve a consulting producer for the series, which will hopefully mean that the adaptation will do right by the source material.
