Having won the Project Greenlight screenwriting contest and endured a documentary about his initiation into movie-making, Pete Jones delivered this sugar-coated paean to childhood and lost innocence. The concept of a 1970s Catholic kid trying to convert a Chicago rabbi's son to please God is not without its controversies. But Jones takes such a superficial approach to the differences in culture and faith that he neither offends nor enlightens. Bonnie Hunt rings true as the eight-year-old's mother, but Aidan Quinn and Kevin Pollak are much more predictable as the respective fathers of do-gooding Adi Stein and the leukaemia-stricken Mike Weinberg.
