Peter Weir's atmospheric, Australian-made, Hollywood-backed romantic political thriller sees Aussie radio journalist Mel Gibson on assignment in the combustible Indonesian dictatorship of the mid-1960s. The movie wanders at times, but also offers plenty of spectacle and colour, a steamy romance between Gibson and British embassy attaché Sigourney Weaver, and its share of excitement when Gibson discovers more than it is safe for him to know. But the highlight is Linda Hunt's Oscar-winning performance as a tiny male Chinese-Australian photographer.
