SYNOPSIS

Melvyn Bragg travels to London's East End to look back at the squalor of urban slums in the 1930s, and discovers the sense of community that existed there. Cousins Pat and Carole meet their grandfather, who featured in a 1935 film about life in Stepney, and Stan Hardy shares his tales from the workhouse.
